LECTURE 5

Today, I listen grad student describe about Social Network Sites. They talk about definition, history and scholarship of the Social Network Site.

Nowadays, Social Network is a part of people’s daily life. There are many ton of Social Network Sites and most of they also have the same feature, but the thing that makes them different is the culture that builds around them. Therefore, Social Network is very popular and many researchers try to work on this. So grad student collect many articles and summarize the concepts of Social Network and then I analyze it again to write in this blog.

The definition of Social Network Sites

The web-base service is around the individual to construct the semi public profile. So when you go to list of friend’s profile, you can find friends of friend. Networking mean we are in the phrase of relationship. The profile is a page to show the user information and also the list of friend. There is some of profiles visibility. For example, public will make your profile visible to every person on the Internet or you can choose private to limit who you want to share with. There are two variation of online relationship. First, you can add friend to someone and then they accept your request. Second, you just follow them; you don’t have to sent request to them.

We can identify the Social Network Sites

- Feature: photo sharing, message, video, blog etc.

- User: The sites will have different kinds of users and it depends on geographic, religion and sexual orientation.

The history of Social Network Sites

The social network has launch in 1997. User can add the profile to Social Network and you can see list of friends from the profile. From the past, it had the application for chat. For example, AIM and ICQ; it uses for sent the message like ‘MSN’. In the past, it can send only the texts but now it can send photo, video etc.

The Rise (and fall) of Friendster

It’s the early Social Network in USA; launch in 2004.It design to use with friends of friend. Friendster is popular in Philippine, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. User can personalize their page.

The Golbal Phenomenon

Social Network has impact all over the world. For example, my space becomes a premium Social Network in Brazil, Window Live Space in English, Friendster in pacific Island, Skywalk in France etc.

Expanding Niche Communities
Some Social Network focus and support on community to build their own.
- Facebook: It began support Harvard University and you must have Harvard ID to access in Facebook. After that Facebook began to support high school and others, then everyone in the world can access it.
- Online dating service: Use for single people to find the couple.

nowadays, number of person that uses Social Network is increasing. Therefore, many corporations invest time and money to creating, purchasing, promoting and advertising on Social Network. On the other hand, many officers use Social Network during their work, so the companies try to block all the Social Network.

Previous of Social Network

From the global phenomenon I see that Social Network emerge from diverse, region and eras. There are many interesting topic to research. For example, you must make the first impression to your site. Friend finding is also important because if the Social Network Site can suggests friend to friend, it will make more impress. In contrast, there are some dramas because friend in Social Network is not the same real friend. Therefore, the important is how to make users interest their site.

Network and Network Structure

There are many users in Social Network and the way to make it growing; it must easily find friend. The groups of Social Network come from many things. For instance, music group, the user interest. Many Social Networks has offline data: profile. People usually use ‘search’ to find friends more than guess.

Privacy

For the first research of privacy is how to make the children save in Social Network in 2006. The next research is ‘Privacy paradox’. It means conflict between users. It’s the privacy profile and they have ability to choose and hide the information that they don’t need to show. Another research is ‘Phishing’. The personal information can be sold. It can use fake site to deceive you to enter your information. So, you should check the URL first before enters the personal information. Sometime I think that Social network interrupt my life. For example, new feeds that occur all the time in Facebook; maybe I don’t want to see it. The last research is ‘legal conception’. If you have some information that you don’t want anyone to see, but why the police or government can see.

Future Work

The new technologies come to effect us and many researches cannot cover the total factor. The traditional in each country are also have the effect to the future work.

Conclusion

The concept of Social Network Sites including: functions and feature.

Social network have at lease 3 function

- Profile: It uses to show who are you and what you are being.

- Friend List: You can communicate with them.

- Travel and browsing: You can post or share something to other profile.

Key Feature

- User Profile: You can create you profile to tell your basic information or identity.

- Communication: You can comment or have interacted with other. You can also send private personal message.

- Privacy: Privacy is very important in Social Network because some post you don’t want anyone to see. So, you can hide it from them.

- Relationship: The first thing that you do when you use the Social Network is search for friends that also uses this.

My question is..

How do you know that your account will save from the Social Network?

ANS The first thing you should do when you sign up for any Social Network Sites, you must follow the step, read all the information clearly and check the identity when the warning occur.
